The company that became Alfa Romeo was founded as Societ\u00e0 Anonima Italiana Darracq<\/b> (SAID) in 1906 by the French automobile firm of Alexandre Darracq, with some Italian investors. One of these, Cavaliere Ugo Stella, became chairman of the SAID in 1909. By the end of 1909 the Darracq cars were not selling well, so Stella founded a new company named A.L.F.A.<\/b> (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili). The first non-Darracq car produced by the company was the 1910 24 HP, designed by Giuseppe Merosi. In 1911 A.L.F.A. ventured into motor racing, with drivers Franchini and Ronzoni competing in the Targa Florio with two 24-hp models.<\/p>\n

After the First World War, entrepreneur Nicola Romeo invested heavily in acquiring A.L.F.A. The first Alfa Romeo, the P2 Grand Prix car, (which won Alfa Romeo the inaugural world championship for Grand Prix cars in 1925), was born, and Alfa Romeo came to the world stage with a bang.<\/p>\n

A lot has happened in the car industry since 1906.
